Update: 10/6/2012 TIN FILKER CONTEST SUBJECT is TIN MAN. (Hey, going with a theme here.) This can be any kind of Tin Man – the Wizard of Oz, of course, comes to mind, but don’t stop there, think outside the box, follow where your muse takes you. Judging criteria will be a point system of 1-5 and everyone in attendance will have a judging sheet. Here are the areas asked about: 1. Does the song meet the criteria of the theme? 2. Can the song be understood/enjoyed without knowing the theme? 3. Does the song engage the listener and/or have emotional impact? (1=Why am I listening? 5=I laughed, I cried, I got goose bumps.) 4. Is the song memorable? 5. Overall, how much do you like the song? So, nothing too technical and only half the criteria of OVFF’s Iron Filker contest. To qualify the song should have a minimum of 2 verses and a chorus (or the equivalent thereof) and may be performed by the author or a friend and you will not be judged on your performance, only the content of the song. Have fun with it, that’s what it’s all about. The winner will have their song in the Archon 37 Filk Book, their picture posted on the website and be able to say they won Archon’s first ever songwriting contest. See you there!!
Update: 9/12/2012 This year, Archon will be inaugurating a " T I N F I L K E R " contest. Everything will be the similar to its Iron cousin except we'll need TWO VERSES and a CHORUS and instead of announcing the "subject" on Friday, we'll be announcing the "subject" RIGHT HERE! The "subject" should be posted by Monday, October 8! That will give you FOUR EXTRA DAYS to work it out! Entries may be performed by the songwriter or a designee, however the AUTHOR MUST BE PRESENT. The performances will be on Sunday at 2:40, in conjunction with the Dead Puppy Filk programming. So look back here soon for the "subject"!
Update: 9/6/2012 Plans continue to unfold as we prepare to welcome Vixy and Tony! This duo is one of the brightest new stars on the Western fan scene. Widely celebrated, they’ve won three Pegasus Awards as a team, plus one more for Vixy solo. They’ve been Filk GoH’s at several major conventions. (Click on their webpage link to explore their music.) Vixy and Tony will have two different concerts. FRIDAY NIGHT MAIN STAGE CONCERT SATURDAY CONCERT SERIES As always, our schedule will include seminars on diverse music topics like recording, performing, a guitar clinic, songwriting and panels of varying topics. Don’t forget our Open Filk on Friday and Saturday night after all the normal folk (can you use the word 'normal' at a Con?) have retired to their own various vices. Our Filk GoHs, Vixy and Tony, are enthusiastic open filk attendees, so don't miss it this year! Archon 36 Songbook If you haven’t signed up already, what are you waiting for? Get over to the registration page and get your membership already! You won’t want to miss Archon 36! Hey there, Filk aficionados! Welcome to Archon, the con with the most vibrantly growing Filk program in the Midwest!
In the 3-year GoH zodiac, again we come to a Year of the Filk. Woohoo! This year we have some very special guests -- not that we have had anything but very special guests before -- From Seattle, please prepare yourselves to welcome Vixy and Tony!
This duo is one of the brightest new stars on the Western fan scene. Widely celebrated, they’ve won three Pegasus Awards as a team, plus one more for Vixy solo. They’ve been Filk GoH’s at several major conventions, as well as GAFilk in Atlanta.
These dynamic performers put on a fantastic concert, and are also enthusiastic open Filk attendees. Click on their webpage link to explore their music. In addition, they’ll be doing panels involving home recording, guitar playing, and song writing, just to name a few. So there will be plenty of opportunities to see, hear, and meet them, and pick up some good tips as well as great entertainment.
We are working on other programming items as well, but be sure to catch Vixy and Tony's concert on Saturday--we'd hate to have to watch you kick yourself for the rest of the con...
Another news tidbit is our open Filk location may move to an even more hospitable location. That is, another nicely comfortable Doubletree room with less periodic sonic bombardment. The newly remodeled convention spaces gave the con-com several learning experiences; feedback has been discussed and improvement planning is in the works. Stay tuned for further developments ...
Archon 36 Songbook: Archon will once again produce a free Archon Filk Book. (3rd year in a row! Yea!) This year we open about half of the book to submissions, rather than just by invitation. Filkers who want to submit songs for consideration should send them to Cat at This e-mail address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it with This e-mail address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it in the subject.
Submissions should be original work you own the rights to and not be racier than PG-13 (this is a family con). We are looking for songs appealing to fen that are clever, funny, evocative, tell a good story, or just plain fun to sing. Our preferred format is lyric sheets with chords. If your song is a parody, TTO (To Tune Of) rather than chords is preferred in order to protect the copyright of the original work. Submission does not guarantee publication, as space is limited.
You are only granting us the right to print your song once, and no money changes hands. If you have not seen one of our books, the inside front cover has this disclaimer: “This filk book is for the sole purpose of sharing our love of filk. It is a free book. No part of this book may be sold or profited from by anyone. No part of it may be copied without the express permission of the author of the individual song. Each author is the sole owner of their work appearing here which is reprinted with their kind permission.”
If you have a website and want people to be able to find more of your music, we will put that contact information on the inside front cover as well. Deadline for consideration is August 1st.
And if that isn’t enough, don’t forget we have Archon’s fearless filk leader Gary “MoFilker” Hanak and the St. Louis’ filk band The Unusual Suspects, who will be performing as well. Keep checking back, we’re working on having links to concert footage and other cool images soon.
